Slap Her, She’s French

“What on earth?” will be most people’s reaction to the title of this film, and watching it scarcely makes it much clearer.

Opening like a lightweight Drop Dead Gorgeous, it shows popular small-town blonde Starla (McGregor) winning the local beauty contest on the reluctant promise that she’ll take in a French exchange student.

Cue Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly) as Genevieve, a beret-wearing extra from ‘Allo ‘Allo, all thick accent and stripy tops… until she decides she wants Starla’s glamorous life, and will do just about anything to get it.

** Single White Female** tactics follow, but the tone is so muddled and the characterisation so superficial, it’s hard to know whether you’re watching a thriller, a comedy or a teen romance. Its few amusing set-pieces could entertain older teen movie fans — if they’re feeling generous.
