In defiance of all those who grumble that its glory days are behind it, The Simpsons keeps on rolling, currently airing its 28th season, has been renewed for two more.
The latest renewal is notable for the fact that it pushes the show past the number of episodes logged by the previous primetime (soaps don't count) record holder for highest count: Gunsmoke, which ran on US TV between 1955 and 1975 logged 635 episodes and somewhere in the new run, The Simpsons will cross that point, ending the 30th season with a count of 669. As commented by Homer in the official press release: "Take that Gunsmoke! You lost a race you didn't even know you were running!"
So yes... the misadventures of Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge, Maggie and the numerous residents of Springfield will not be stopping any time soon. And while no show could be as consistent as it once was after nearly 30 years on the air, it's still able to find the fun. Here's to 30 more! Okay, probably not.
