★★★★★

Washed-up actor Chin Siu-ho tries to hang himself in a grim apartment building. Assailed by supernatural beings as he dangles, he is rescued by a cook (Anthony Chan) who claims descent from a line of vampire-hunters.

You’ll get more from Rigor Mortis if you know Chin is doing a Birdman by playing a version of himself in a deliberately downbeat take on the 1980s Chinese horror films (Mr Vampire etc) he starred in. Though it plays the miserable card like M Night Shyamalan doing a fun-free Ghostbusters sequel, Juno Mak’s film is gorgeously-crafted, with an array of odd characters and eerie moments.
