Christian Slater takes a decent stab at William H. Macy’s patented loser role in this dark comedy about office schmuck Bob Maconel, who becomes a town hero when he shoots down a co-worker who’s gone on a shooting spree.
Elisha Cuthbert is excellent as Bob’s crush, paralysed by a bullet and not at all keen on being alive, while Macy himself watches over proceedings as Maconel’s boss. Slater is suitably creepy and nondescript, as someone who’d much rather have carried out the shooting spree himself, and whose new-found idyllic life crumbles into paranoia. But an enjoyable satire is let down by a third act that juggles too many ideas for its own good.
