The Phantom Of The Opera Review

A mysterious masked character who haunts the Paris Opera House seeks to protect and promote a young soprano. What are his motives and who is he?

They called Lon Chaney 'the man of a thousand faces', and one of his best was the skull-like monstrosity he devised for this silent classic.

The moment when young soprano Christine (Mary Philbin) unmasks the shrivelled visage of her protector/ kidnapper has never lost its power to shock. Equally impressive is the Phantom's entrance during a masked ball - this print presents the scene in two-colour Technicolor with the Red Death costume making a bloody impact.

Lon Chaney's magnetism and the overall impact of the suspense and reveal is still impressive.
