The story of the rise to fame of Paul Potts, the inaugural winner of Britain’s Got Talent, is a gentle if perfunctory, episodic affair, following Potts from his early years as the strange, opera-obsessed kid who got bullied to his triumph in the contest in 2007. Directed by The Devil Wears Prada’s David Frankel, the comedy feels clunky and a little shopworn, but James Corden gives a warm, empathic performance as the accident-prone warbler, the supporting cast of Brit stalwarts are game if hardly stretched, and there’s a bleak beauty to Florian Ballhaus’ shots of the Welsh industrial landscape Potts calls home.
