Despite the cartoon residents of Hanna-Barbera’s future-set world staunchly resisting all attempts to reimagine them for the big screen, Warner Bros. just won’t let go of the idea of a Jetsons film. The studio has now hired writer Matt Lieberman – no stranger to working on animated movies for the company after producing drafts of a new Scooby-Doo pic – to tackle the tough job.

We say tough because this is a nut that producers, studio executives and filmmakers have been trying to crack for years now. Despite a seemingly attractive proposition – known brand, family-friendly attitude, plenty of futuristic fun to be had in the right hands – George Jetson and the rest of the space-age answer to The Flintstones have been piloting their flying car through nearly two decades of development hell, flitting between straight cartoon attempts and even talk of Robert Rodriguez trying to turn the idea into a live-action film.

Nothing has yet come to pass, and so here we are with Warners once more eyeing a cartoon movie version. Will the family actually make it to their destination this time? There’s always a chance...
