You know the drill by now. Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) doesn’t want to hurt anyone, but he will if necessary. And, boy, is it necessary a lot in this new trailer for the second outing for Lee Child’s unflappable super-loner, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Watch it below.

“You’re a legend,” Cobie Smulders’ Susan Turner tells him. “People wonder why you left.” Listen lady, he left because he’s Jack Reacher. It’s what he does. He leaves. If you’re lucky, he’ll even close the door behind him.

But as the title hints, this time the former military policeman is breaking the habit of a lifetime and going back again. In this instalment, an adaptation of Child’s 18th Reacher novel, he’ll be trying to rescue Smulder’s US Army major from an espionage conspiracy that’s bigger than anyone imagined. His solution? Well, it involves some solid Reacher-grade put-downs and quite a lot of fighting.

Edward Zwick, Cruise’s old The Last Samurai director, has taken the directing mantle from Jack Reacher’s Christopher McQuarrie. Gossip Girl’s Patrick Heusinger takes on primary villain duties, with Holt McCallany appearing here in a J.T. Walsh-like role.

Look out for more on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in the new issue of Empire{ =nofollow}, onsale on June 30. The movie punches its way into our multiplexes on October 21.
