It's all about shared universes these days, and Universal – a studio with a long and proud history of horror movies – have been busy laying the groundwork for a new shared universe of their own, featuring their most famous monsters as the stars. The first entry in the Universal Monstersiverse? A remake of The Mummy with Tom Cruise, and we've been given a whole 16 seconds of footage to look at. Take a look below.

Though we are loathed to give too much oxygen to a 'teaser for a teaser', there's some pretty interesting stuff in these sixteen seconds. They include Sofia Boutella as a four-eyed Mummy, a tomb being loaded into a plane, and – of course! – Tom Cruise, running.

This is a new version of a franchise which has mysteriously come back to life several times over the years, first appearing in 1932 with Boris Karloff as the Mummy. Later versions saw Abbot and Costello encounter the Egyptian undead, and more recently, Brendan Fraser tackled the Pharoahs in the 1999 edition.

This latest take has Star Trek's Alex Kurtzman in the directors chair, working from a script by Doctor Strange's Jon Spaihts. Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance are also in the cast – as is Russell Crowe, playing Dr Henry Jeykll for a bit of shared universe synergy.

The full trailer for The Mummy arrives on Sunday, and it's aiming for those big summer blockbuster dollars, currently working towards a 9 June, 2017 release date. The first poster also arrived today – see below.
