With its live-action TV and film roster bubbling away nicely and grabbing plenty of attention, Netflix is looking to bolster its animated offerings and is turning to the man behind The Simpsons, Matt Groening, for a new series.

Quite what the show will be is strictly being kept behind closed doors at the streaming service for now, but according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, it could well score two initial seasons of 10 episodes, which is useful given how long it takes to make an animated series compared to live-action.

It's certainly a big score for Netflix: while Groening isn't the only person to credit for the ongoing success of The Simpsons (currently in its 27th season and the longest-running animated series in US TV history), he was certainly the brains behind the original concept, and also brought us Futurama. So we're interested to see what he has up his sleeve next, and who might end up working with him on it.

Netflix has a few animated offerings already, including the excellent BoJack Horseman and more recent launch F Is For Family.
