Disney Channel starlet Selena Gomez is looking to get a little more proactive than some of her contemporaries when it comes to her career. She already has a production company in place and has just optioned the rights to Jandy Nelson’s novel The Sky Is Everywhere.
It’s early days for the film, which doesn’t yet have a writer or director attached or any studio backing as of yet, but if it comes together, Gomez wants to play Lennie Walker, an introverted 17-year-old band geek and bookworm who lives in the shadow of her much more popular and adventurous older sister, Bailey. But Bailey dies suddenly and Lennie is catapulted into a whole new life, and becomes torn between two boys, one her sister’s grieving boyfriend (blimey, he doesn’t hang about, does he?) and the other a sensitive French musician studying in Paris. And (whodathunkit?) she comes out of her shell and realises that she’s actually quite attractive, even as her usually ordered world falls apart when she tries to juggle two relationships.
Gomez was last seen in the strictly tweencentric Monte Carlo, a bad film in which she was fairly decent, and from the looks of Sky it won’t exactly stretch her into very new territory. It does, however, look like she’s aiming to take more risks, as she’s also signed on for Harmony Korine’s girls-rob-a-restaurant-to-fund-their-holiday crime pic Spring Breakers, which is lining up to shoot in, er, spring.
