How do you follow a show like Mad Men? If you're Matthew Weiner you apparently plump for something even more ambitious. Such as an anthology drama with a sprawling cast and a concept that sounds intriguing. See the first trailer for The Romanoffs below.

The series, the first anthology offering from Amazon's Prime Video service, will spin eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the titular Russian royal family. Quite how that translates into both comedy and drama remains to be seen, but Weiner has clearly used the deep pockets offered by the streaming service – episodes will be set in Europe, America and the Far East, with plenty of location shooting to bring the various countries to the screen.

And the cast is mammoth, including Mad Men veterans John Slattery and Christina Hendricks plus Aaron Eckhart, Isabelle Huppert, Diane Lane, Amanda Peet, Kathryn Hahn, Corey Stoll, Kerry Bishé, Jack Huston and many more.

Episodes one (The Violet Hour) and two (The Royal We) will debut on 12 October, with the rest following on a weekly basis.
