It was one of the trailblazing shows that announced Netflix as a force to be reckoned with in television. But now, after the upcoming seventh season, Orange Is The New Black is being released from its term.

Announced via a twitter video that features the cast talking up what the show has meant to them, the show, which received a three-season renewal before its fourth season premiere, is ready to leave our screens.

"After seven seasons, it’s time to be released from prison," says series creator Jenji Kohan. "I will miss all the badass ladies of Litchfield and the incredible crew we’ve worked with. My heart is orange but fade to black."

Kohan crafted the show, adapted from Piper Kerman's memoir of her year in prison and has seen it evolve after the last few years into a sprawling drama that has earned numerous Emmy nominations (including becoming the first show to be nominated in both comedy and drama categories), with Uzo Aduba winning Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series for her work as prisoner Suzanne Warren.

Season seven is due to premiere next summer, wrapping up the various storylines.
