The Graduate's director Mike Nichols seems more comfortable in the theatre these days. Last year he was behind the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller's Death Of A Salesman (with Philip Seymour Hoffman), and he's currently working with Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz on Harold Pinter's Betrayal. He hasn't made a film since the excellent Charlie Wilson's War in 2008, but if anyone can tempt him back behind the camera, we'd suggest it might be J.J. Abrams. Nichols is currently in talks with Abrams and his Bad Robot cohorts to direct **One Last Thing Before I Go.
The film is based on the novel by Jonathan Tropper about a former drummer in a one-hit-wonder rock band, washed up in a residential hotel after the failure of his marriage. He finds out that his daughter is pregnant and his wife is remarrying at the same time that he learns that he's got a serious heart condition. Rather than undergoing surgery in preparation for grandad-hood however, he decides simply to face the inevitable, and concentrate on putting his emotional affairs in order while he's still around to mend the necessary fences.
Bad Robot, as usual, are in cahoots with Paramount on this, and the studio seem keen to move ahead reasonably quickly. They're apparently already talking to actors, although no names have yet been dropped. Nichols though, has reportedly had some casual Broadway downtime conversations with the aforementioned Mr Craig, so while he's not officially aboard the project yet, it does sound as if he's doing some serious musing.
