Following its success adapting a scathing look at British politics into the US based House Of Cards, Netflix appears to be targeting the royal family next. The company is close to a deal for The Crown, a new series from Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry{
The show would be based on the pair’s celebrated 2013 play The Audience, in which Helen Mirren reprised her role as the Queen but played her at several points through the decades as she interacted with the Prime Ministers who have come to power during her time on the throne.
Exact details on the show have yet to be announced, as the deal is still being made, but Morgan and Daldry would both be involved, producing the series with Andy Harries, Robert Fox and Matthew Byam Shaw, backed by Sony Television. Whether Mirren would return to play the Queen, and indeed how closely the series would follow the format of the play, is not yet clear, but we can certainly see the appeal for her in taking the role once more - and she was magnificent onstage. However, given that the play begins with the Queen in her twenties, that might be a stretch for Mirren onscreen (though she was actually pretty convincing onstage).
Morgan last wrote Rush and has worked once more with Ron Howard on Heart Of The Sea. He also has TV mini-series The Lost Honour in production. Daldry is editing his latest film, Trash, written by Richard Curtis and Felipe Braga.
