While Hasbro continues to turn its toy and game lines into big franchise films like the Transformers series, Mattel has had less luck getting its own off the ground. It tried with Max Steel at Paramount, but watched as that sat on a shelf. Now the company has the rights back and is teaming up with Dolphin Entertainment to get it back in active development{ =nofollow}.

The Max Steel toys have so far inspired TV ‘toons, direct-to-video movies and comics. They focus on an extreme sports-loving teen who is imbued with the energy of TURBO – Tachyon Unlimited Radiant Bio-Optimized – or, to put it in less flashy terms, nanobots.

While Paramount was building the idea for its film around Taylor Lautner, no one is currently attached to the role. Marvel animation veteran Christopher Yost is set to write the script and H+ director Stewart Hendler will call the shots.

It might not be the most popular or well known of properties, but both companies will be hoping Max Steel can finally have his moment. Just.. Do us a favour and cast your net wider than just Lautner, eh?
