When he’s not busy defending the idea of Batfleck, Matt Damon is getting on with the business of starring in, and making, movies. In this case, he's cameoing in Chris Nolan’s Interstellar and lining up to direct another.
Let’s tackle Interstellar first. The Playlist broke the word that Damon has agreed to play a small role in the secretive Dark Knight director’s latest. While the details are naturally being kept under the patented Nolan cone of silence, the actor will apparently be involved with two weeks of filming in Iceland. With the film currently in production and set to shoot for several months, this is another interesting wrinkle.
Damon joins Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Topher Grace, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, David Oyelowo, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn and Bill Irwin in the film, which will see explorers heading through a wormhole. At least, what’s what Nolan wants us all to think... For all we know this is a bait-and-switch on a massive scale and it’s really a musical based on The Beano (which we would also accept, because that could be amazing).
And, after several years of flirting with possible directing projects (including** Promised Land**, which he ended up handing off to Gus Van Sant), Damon may have finally found his directorial debut in A Foreigner.
Adapted from David Grann’s 2011 New Yorker article 'A Murder Foretold' by Argo’s Chris Terrio, it’s the true story of a man who becomes a victim of the escalating violence in Guatemala, and leaves behind a videotape after his death implicating the president, his wife, and other close aides in his killing. The case had huge political ramifications, and sounds like a compelling film to kick off Damon’s megaphone career.
It’s still early days, however, and the deals are not yet set in stone. Plus, there’s always F****ather Daughter Time**, which Damon set up in 2011 at Warners. Still, A Foreigner appears to be closer to fruition.
