The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Wins Big At The 2018 Emmy Awards

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

In a typically political (because what event isn't in these charged days) ceremony, the 2018 Emmy Awards were handed out Monday evening in Hollywood. And it was a good night for Amazon, whose show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, took home the comedy series award, comedy lead actress for Rachel Brosnahan, supporting actress in the form of Alex Borstein, plus writing and directing gongs for creator Amy Sherman Palladino.

With a huge haul of nominations, Game Of Thrones scored plenty of its own Emmys, walking off with Drama Series, and Peter Dinklage as Best Supporting Actor. A long-overdue trophy went to Matthew Rhys for The Americans, which is welcome since the show has just ended.

HBO may not have scored big with Thrones, but Thandie Newton got a Supporting Actress win for Westworld. And the cable channel did well with comedy, as Bill Hader nabbed (lead) and Henry Winkler won supporting (his first Emmy ever, which is surely some sort of crime given his career) in the comedy category for Barry. And though Netflix was not as strong as in other years, it still scored some awards for shows such as The Crown (Claire Foy took lead actress in drama and Stephen Daldry won for direction), Godless (Merritt Wever and Jeff Daniels) and the cancelled Seven Seconds, which saw Regina King win Limited Series Best Actress.

Oh, and one winner in particular, for more than one reason was director Glenn Weiss, who took home Outstanding Direction For A Variety Special thanks to his work on the Oscars, and used his speech to propose to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. She said yes! Would've been awkward if she hadn't.
