Some films feel like they’re the weedy kid at school, never picked for teams and forced to sit on the development bench while their friends get called up to try their luck. For years, indie drama The Only Living Boy In New York has felt that way, with several directors and possible stars coming and going. But now, according to producers Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger, its time may finally have arrived. Again. And Marc Webb's on course to direct.
Talking with the always-excellent Ann Thompson about various subjects (including their latest release, Ruby Sparks), the indie powerhouse producing duo dropped a tiny mention that after seven years, they now have Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb attached the make the movie.
Taking its title from the Simon and Garfunkel song, the coming-of-age plot finds a young man learning that his oppressive father is having an affair. But when he tries to shut down the romance, he falls for the woman involved. Cue further familial dysfunction but also a chance for a learning experience thanks to some wise words from an odd neighbour.
When last this hit our sensors, Horrible Bosses** director Seth Gordon was on board with Logan Lerman starring. Now Webb is the man in the folding chair, but of course there’s some element of suspense as to what he'll do next. Will it be this, some other project or another boy in New York, one Peter Parker, for the Spider-sequel? All this sounds as though the indie drama might be waiting a little longer. Hope it has a book handy…
