French filmmaker (and recent Empire Award recipient) Luc Besson has a new blockbuster cooking. Valerian – or to give it its full wordy title, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets is out in July, and has just earned itself a shiny new trailer. Take a look below.

Occupying similar territory to the sort of tone and visual approach Besson dabbled with in 1997’s The Fifth Element, this idiosyncratic space opera is based on the French graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline. The focus is on Valerian (Dane DeHann) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) as a couple of ‘special operatives’ charged with looking after the human territories of the universe.

Their adventures take them to the intergalactic city of Alpha, a metropolis of seventeen million residents and over 2,000 species. Our heroes are charged with protecting the citizens from dark forces – while also dealing with their inevitable cloud of sexual tension.

Also starring Clive Owen, John Goodman, Ethan Hawke, and Rihanna, Valerian And The Film Title Of A Thousand Words, as we are nicknaming it, arrives in cinemas in July 2017.
