Kevin Smith Prepares To Hit Somebody

This seems to have entirely passed us by over the festive season, but the word on the street (or indeed, from the horse's mouth) is that Kevin Smith's next project is an Ice Hockey movie, based on a novelty song by Warren Zevon.

Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song) is the touching tale of a Canadian farmboy who dreams of stardom with a stick and a puck, but has no discernible talent in that direction. He's good at hitting people though, and the big teams are "always in need of a goon"...

As of last month, Smith had "pages and pages of notes" and was "fucking poised to go". Hockey films however - even the great ones like Slapshot - could not be said to have a solid gold performance history at the box office, so the erstwhile Silent Bob is sanguine about the scale of the film's ambition: "you go in with tailored expectations. You know you're kind of dealing with a specific audience, so you know, we'll probably make it on the inexpensive side."

Films based on songs are also treacherous territory (Convoy anyone?) but Smith is confident that he can pull this one off. It's a movie he "sees in his head and feels in his heart": "it's gonna hit you in a very personal place."
