Good grief… James Cameron has told us time and time again that he’s hard at work cracking the script for Avatar 2, and possibly outlining Avatar 3 at the same time. Now from the sound of it, he’s been spending his time in New Zealand drawing pictures of submarines and humming along to this tune. He’s just announced that The Black Dahlia / War Of The Worlds writer Josh Friedman will be coming aboard to work on the Avatar sequel with him{ =nofollow}.

All right, so we know Cameron really has been hard at work revisiting Pandora, and it’s not like he hasn’t drafted in help in the past: Laeta Kalogridis (who is writing the new Terminator reboot) had a hand in polishing the original film’s script.

Friedman is certainly experienced writing for characters that Cameron co-created, albeit in a roundabout way. He was the executive producer behind Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the TV spin-off from Cameron’s universe. Cameron had no direct input into that, but perhaps he was sufficiently impressed that it contributed to his choice of Friedman here.

The writer is also headed back to television, acting as a producer on new pirate drama Crossbones. We figure that working with James Cameron could be even more of a challenge, but one he’s only too willing to accept. As for when we can see Avatar 2? Current estimates say 2015...
