Microsoft and 343 Industries are doing something altogether different to promote the upcoming release of sci-fi shooter Halo 4 – namely creating a movie called Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, revealed online in five seperate chunks before the game's November 4 release. The first episode arrived today via Machinima{ =nofollow}, and you can check it out below.

Set not in the current timeline of the Halo gaming franchise,** Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn** centres around a group of cadets in the United Nations Space Command military academy at the beginning of the human and Covenant war as they take on different colonial insurgents and come to terms with being soldiers.

Thomas Lasky (Tom Green) is the star of the show, and his story is set to prepare gamers for the plot of Halo 4, offering special insight and generally filling out the background of the universe.

Elsewhere, Daniel "Colossus" Cudmore (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, Twilight) plays series hero Master Chief, supported by the likes of Ayelet Zurer (Angels & Demons, Munich) and Mike Dopud (Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol) in the envelope-pushing sort-of-kinda-game adaptation.
