Despite returning pressure from the pirates of Captain Phillips and a new challenge via the telekinetic powers of Carrie, Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity is continuing to be major player at the US box office, carried on a wave of good buzz. The space-borne drama is now three for three, staying at the top of the charts and adding $31 million for a $170.5 million domestic total so far.
And though the chatter had been about Carrie fighting Gravity for the top spot, Captain Phillips rallied, pulling just ahead (though that might change once the final figures are in on Monday) of the troubled teen with $17.3 million as opposed to Carrie’s $17 million.
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 was fourth, earning $10.1 million, while the combined clout of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone could only give The Escape Plan a limp fifth place opening with $9.8 million. Prisoners stayed in sixth place with $2 million, while Nicole Holofcener’s Enough Said added cinemas and entered the top 10 at seventh with $1.8 million. That was enough to trounce critically mixed The Fifth Estate, as the Julian Assange drama could only manage $1.7 million. Runner Runner sank to ninth with $1.6 million while Insidious Chapter 2 earned $1.5 million for 10th place.
