Despite making great big whacking pots of cash when it came out in 2005, Mr. & Mrs. Smith has not yet been sequelised. Perhaps it’s hard getting Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the same room at the same time – we heard those guys did not get along. (What's that? A baby? Oh.)

So, it would seem that without a follow-up on the horizon, Twentieth Century Fox has decided to press ahead and make another movie that could be Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2, in all but name.

The studio today snapped up the rights to a spec script by Alan McElroy, entitled Man & Wife, about a professional killer who must pose as an ordinary husband in order not to blow his cover… and the wife who learns to love him in, and we quote, in a totally unexpected way. (We’re guessing that means she starts killing people too)

Hardly the most original idea in the world, but then neither was Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but that was an ideal example of what happens when you paper over the cracks in a premise with two smokin’ hot movie stars who clearly want to [CENSORED] the [CENSORED], and lashings of visual pizzazz.

X-Men and Fantastic Four producer Ralph Winter will be the man charged with bagging that grade-A talent for Man & Wife. He’s worked with McElroy before, on Fox Faith (yes, you read that right) thriller, Three, and Left Behind: The Movie, which we had no idea existed until now, but which we want to see yesterday.

Our advice? Cast Brad Pitt as the husband, and Angelina Jolie as the wife, and watch the money roll in. This doesn’t mean that you have to call it Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2 – but we quite like the idea of the real-life couple making a series of unconnected action films, like Hepburn and Tracy, only with waaaaay more machine guns.
