Depending on your perspective, it's either a cheeky hat tip to a beloved cartoon character or the worst thing that’s ever happened. Either way, Top Cat Begins is a movie that’s happening, and here’s the trailer and poster to prove it.
If you’ve ever wondered how T.C. met Benny the Ball – not at catnip rehab clinic, it turns out – or the source of the gang’s running feud with Officer Dibble, it’s all in this origin story prequel to the 2011 Mexican/Argentine animation Top Cat: The Movie.
Top Cat, voiced by Rio 2’s Jason Harris, is the tip-top leader of a posse of street cats (Fancy-Fancy, Spook, Choo-Choo, Brain and Benny) who commits petty theft (fish skeletons, mostly) and gets in trouble with the law a lot. Into this Scorsese-esque world stumbles the easily-duped Dibble.
But now there’s an even bigger threat in the croc-like shape of Mr. Big - yes, he’s actually called Mr. Big – into whose claws Top Cat falls. So much for the whole most-effectual/intellectual thing.
