F. Gary Gray To Direct Julius

Modern retelling of Julius Caesar story

Another day, another movie based on a graphic novel.

This time, it’s the turn of Oni Press’ Julius, a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, in which a London gangster is lauded by the public while his generals plot against him.

F. Gary Gray – a solid genre filmmaker who has registered with films like The Italian Job and The Negotiator – will make this his first film since the 2005 misfire, Be Cool. Mandalay Pictures will sign the big cheques.

We’re not familiar with the comic book – written by Antony Johnston and drawn by Brett Weldele – but this sounds like it has potential. Caesar’s story is a classic one and we can easily see how it could be transplanted to the modern era. And, while we love comic book movies, it’s always nice to see one that doesn’t revolve around capes and spandex.
