There was a lot of excitement recently when David Fincher was announced as the potential director of Sony’s planned Steve Jobs biopic. But negotiations reportedly broke down when the studio and the director couldn’t come to terms, so there will be no reunion of the Social Network team. Still, the door has opened for other talented directors, and The Hollywood Reporter has it that Danny Boyle is in talks to take the job{ =nofollow}.

From the sounds of it, Boyle already has an idea of who he wants to star if he does make a deal, sounding out his The Beach leading man Leonardo DiCaprio. The actor recently signed to star in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s thriller The Revenant, so that might cause some scheduling issues if everything works out between Boyle and Sony.

But it’s hard not to get excited at the prospect, unofficial though it may be right now, of Boyle re-teaming with DiCaprio for an Aaron Sorkin script (shepherded by Scott Rudin) about one of technology’s most fascinating, complex titans.

DiCaprio may not look as similar to Jobs as, say, Ashton Kutcher in last year’s indie Jobs, but with Walter Isaacson’s biography fuelling the story and that level of talent involved this could be fantastic. Now we just have to hope it comes together this time.
