The Yards director James Gray brought his latest, The Immigrant,** **to Cannes this year. We can’t say we were too impressed with the film when we saw it at the Festival, and it hasn’t yet been snapped up for distribution here. Still, it’s set to arrive in Europe and there’s a new still featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard online, which you can see above, plus a character poster of Jeremy Renner, lurking in the gallery below.

Cotillard plays Ewa Cybulski, freshly landed in early 20th century New York with a sickly sister and a desperate hope of becoming a citizen. Denied by the authorities, she’s charmed by conniving pimp Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), who exploits her desperation to press her into prostitution. And then there’s Orlando (Renner) a magician – which explains his look in the poster – who falls for her.

Gray has been touring the festival circuit with the film, but there’s no word yet on when it might hit UK shores. The director has a few future projects bubbling away – he most recently took over the job of directing The Lost City Of Z with Benedict Cumberbatch as an ill-fated explorer– and has also co-written a new film, sci-fi thriller T****o The Stars.

Talking to Omelete (with reporting via Collider), Gray mentions that the **To The Stars **script he wrote with Fringe veteran Ethan Goss is set in the near future and finds a group of astronauts on a mission to bring a renegade colonist back to Earth. Gray seems confident it’ll be his next film, but it doesn’t yet appear to have a studio attached.
