Generally speaking, making the transition from overseeing special effects to actually directing your own movie is fraught with peril. For every James Cameron or David Fincher, there are a dozen Stefen Fangmeiers, presiding ineffectually over the likes of Eragon.
But that’s not going to stop Brian Metcalf from writing and directing his very own fantasy movie, Fading Of The Cries.
Metcalf, who’s worked on multi-media content for the likes of 300 and Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, has really only been a visual effects supervisor on one movie, L.A. D.J., which was the directorial debut of Thomas Ian Nicholas. He played Kevin in the American Pie trilogy, if you recall.
So perhaps Metcalf hasn’t been too ingrained in the world of visual effects, and perhaps he can take to directing like a duck to wotsit. Certainly, he must work well with Nicholas, for he’s cast him as the lead in the movie, with Jordan Matthews also on board.
The movie will revolve aound a young man (Nicholas) who uses a magic sword to defend his town from evil forces.
Interestingly, this isn’t a big-budget epic, but an independent film, so it’ll be interesting to see how the effects hold up. If only the director had some sort of background in visual FX…
