He already has some solid actors in place for his latest directing job, but Ben Affleck is adding one more, as Brendan Gleeson has joined Live By Night.

Affleck’s latest adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel finds characters from one of the writer’s previous books (The Given Day) and tracks them into the Prohibition era. Our main focus is Joe Coughlin (Affleck himself), a police captain’s son who, with his brother Danny (Scott Eastwood) finds himself caught up in organised crime as part of a rum-smuggling organization that transports booze from Cuba to Boston via Florida.

Gleeson has snagged the role of Affleck and Eastwood’s father and joins an ensemble that also includes Sienna Miller as Emma Gould, who Coughlin falls for, but who also happens to be the daughter of his mobster boss. Then there’s Zoe Saldana as Graciella Suarez, part of the Floridian crime structure and Elle Fanning playing sheriff’s daughter Loretta Figgis, an aspiring actress who finds herself in a world of trouble. With his Bat-duties complete for now, Affleck is busy directing the movie in Los Angeles and we can expect it to hit our screens at some point in 2017. As for when we’ll next see Gleeson, he’s part of the cast for In The Heart Of The Sea, arriving December 26, and the actor has just finished work on video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed, which is currently set to arrive exactly a year later. Talk about timing…
