He’s always on the look out for diverse projects to adapt via his Plan B company, and now Brad Pitt is dipping into young adult sci-fi as Pitt and his partners are planning to bring Illuminae to screens{ =nofollow}.

Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are behind the new tome, which landed in American bookstores last month. It has an interesting storytelling method, assembling found documents, instant messages, ship schematics, casualty lists and one or two classified files from a spaceship to chronicle the tale of a teenager hacker and her fighter pilot ex-boyfriend who must juggle dealing with their shattered relationship and the only slightly less important issue of a huge intergalactic war threat from an alien race, a rogue artificial intelligence and, oh yes, a deadly virus. Sounds like enough source material for a movie, which explains why Warner Bros. is teaming up with Pitt and his Plan B team to start developing one.

The next step will be finding a writer – or writers – to start work on the adaptation. Acting-wise, Pitt will next be seen alongside his wife Angeline Jolie Pitt (who writes and directs) in By The Sea, washing up here on December 11. He’s also part of the cast – and a producer – for Adam McKay’s financial drama The Big Short, landing on January 22.
