It was announced last year, but then looked it it was all off again for a while. But now David Lynch's new Twin Peaks series is back on, to the extent that shooting is now underway in Washington State. And proving that it won't just be a nostalgia-fest with the surviving original cast, Amanda Seyfried has reportedly signed up for a mystery new role.

It's a return to the small screen for Seyfried, following her move into movies in recent years. Her last big TV gig was Big Love back in 2011, but her episodic CV also includes Veronica Mars, CSI, Law & Order, House MD and Wildfire. Her part in Twin Peaks is a secret for now, although some are speculating she might be the daughter of Agent Dale Cooper and Annie Blackburn.

Twin Peaks' surprise third season has been written by David Lynch and Mark Frost, and Lynch is directing the whole thing. Angelo Badalamenti is doing the music. The original announcement was for nine episodes, but we now seem to be talking about significantly more; possibly as many as 18.

Kyle MacLachlan, Ray Wise, Sheryl Lee and Sherilyn Fenn are among the returning cast, and the series will arrive on Showtime next year, marking Twin Peaks' 25th anniversary.
