While the idea of a choose-your-own-adventure concept worked to a degree with the Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch, that was for people at home. But Alexandre Aja is aiming to bring it to the big screen with an interactive haunted house horror.

Steven Spielberg's Amblin Partners company is producing the film, written by regular Mike Flanagan collaborator Jeff Howard along with Nick Simon. The idea was spawned by Howard and Flanagan, presumably in the sparse moments between them planning 234 other scary prospects.

There are no details on the plot or characters yet, but Collider has heard that the movie will employ the CtrlMovie technology, which allows audience members to influence the storyline using an app on their phones. They'll be able to decide what characters do at pivotal points in the narrative, which means that there will be different stories, endings and even running times on offer.

Of course, it also means people using the mobiles in the cinema, which as we all know, is annoying and distracting – there's a reason this has been tried before but hasn't caught on.

Aja's latest, alligator horror Crawl, arrives here on 23 August.
