Despite being all but wrapped on principal photography for the film, David Fincher has clearly decided that what his version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo needs is a little injection of Hey It’s That Guy credibility, hiring one of the stalwarts of the description, Alan Dale, for a small role.

Dale, who was once best known as Jim from Aussie soap Neighbours but has since gone on to crop up in almost every American TV series made in the last few years, playing Caleb Nicol on The OC and Charles Widmore on Lost, among many other roles.

For Fincher, he’s appearing as a career police detective on the verge of retirement. There’s no word on how long he shot for, but we doubt it can be more than a few days at most.

He’s joining a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson among many others.

Fincher’s take on Stieg Larsson’s novel, adapted this time by Steven Zaillian, will hit our screens on December 26. Dale, meanwhile, will next be seen on fantasy TV drama Once Upon a Time.
