In this dry, engaging caper with character, Paul Newman plays a wily old bank robber who fakes a stroke to get transferred from prison into a nursing home. But sassy nurse Fiorentino is wise to him. Shes the prom queen whose life has gone nowhere with feckless hubby Mulroney, so she entices the criminal sage to mastermind a heist.
This is a nifty comedy, with the threesomes carefully planned robbery providing a pacy little adventure with some marvellous one-liners and smart twists. And a lot of the pleasure is down to Newman giving a masterclass in timing, sardonic delivery and weathered charm.
