Like Sex And The City, this film holds a mirror up to women and draws its laughs from exaggerated observations about their gender's foibles. Andie's attempts to sabotage her new relationship are a case in point: she starts by insisting Ben fetch her a Coke during the climax of a basketball game, then escalates into creating pictures of their future children. That Ben's efforts to make Andie fall in love are eventually confined to gritting his teeth in the face of her apparently split personality make the behavioural insight rather one-sided, however. And there's scant sign of emotional turmoil as the two gradually fall for the people they're supposed to be manipulating.
A light romance, then - but one with a few surprises and a fondness for chick-flick bashing that should endear it to young women weary of more traditional romantic comedies.
