Count Olaf is back and he's as ornery and malicious as ever. In Netflix’s new eight-part series Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Neil Patrick Harris takes over the evil aristocrat’s mantle from Jim Carrey and sets about making the lives of three orphaned children as miserable as possible. Check out its new trailer below.

The villain of Daniel Handler’s kids' series, Olaf is a schemer with ambitions towards his nephew and nieces’ inheritence. Newly-orphaned after the mysterious death of their parents, Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and Sunny Baudelaire are left to fend for themselves in the face of his plans and schemes. Luckily, they're pretty darn good at it.

If you got a kick out of the gothic creepiness of Brad Silberling’s 2004 Snicket – and we’d have happily watched a sequel – this one looks like offering more of the same. Barry Sonnenfeld, a past master of just those kind of kooky joys in The Addams Family, looks a good fit of director for the material. Sure enough, it’s actually his second run at it. He wrote the 2004 script before departing the project over budgetary issues.

With Lemony himself voiced by Patrick Warburton (Rules Of Engagement), Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events arrives on Netflix globally on 13 January.
