The Lego Batman Movie

Even with the combined might of Matt Damon, weird medical treatments and comedy fisticuffs, the new movies out this week couldn't make a dent in the shared American box office supremacy of The Lego Batman Movie and Fifty Shades Darker.

According to studio estimates for the three-day weekend (it's Presidents' Day this Monday), The Lego Batman Movie scored another resounding win against the competition, earning $34.2 million and heading close to $100 million domestically after just two weeks on release. As for the Fifty Shades sequel, the BDSM-lite romantic drama earned $20.9 million to stay in second place.

The most successful new arrival – and "successful" is a relative term, considering its critical reaction, memes mocking the potential white saviour aspect and the fact that it needs to make back a hefty $150 million production budget – was The Great Wall, which made a less-than-splashy $18 million to launch third. The Chinese co-production at least has the benefit of strong overseas figures, where it has already earned $244 million on top of what it did in the States.

Fourth place was John Wick: Chapter 2, punching up $16.5 million, while new arrival Fist Fight could only manage a fifth place start, taking home $12 million.

Hidden Figures fell one place to sixth, adding $7.1 million, while Split slipped to seventh on $7 million. But since both films have long since surpassed $100 million on slim budgets, their backers will be quite happy.

A Dog's Purpose dropped a couple of places to eighth and $5.5 million, while La La Land was ninth with $4.5 million. The weekend's big flop was A Cure For Wellness, as the gothic medical horror thriller, largely lambasted by critics, saw audiences stay away, making just $4.2 million to start out in 10th place. There's not much that can be done about that condition...
