Elia Kazan’s screen version of Scott Fitzgerald’s last, uncompleted novel — scripted by Harold Pinter — is a must-see for Robert De Niro’s quiet, compelling performance as the lonely boy wonder film producer (based on MGM studio boss Irving Thalberg). Jack Nicholson, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum and Jeanne Moreau are terrific in support. Enchanting scene: De Niro demonstrating in mime “how to make movies” to distraught writer Donald Pleasance.

De Niro's little known masterclass makes this essential viewing.
