Exhausted and frustrated by her husband's career priorities, Joanna (Streep) ups and leaves him holding the baby. But by the time she's back in the picture and wants custody of her son, Ted (Hoffman) has learnt to fend for himself and little Billy and actually quite likes it.

Ad-exec Dustin Hoffman learns how to be a better father when wife Meryl Streep departs to "find herself", lumbering him with their little brat, whereupon Dustin goes to extreme lengths to be a wonderful, caring kind of dad, sacrificing all for the kid, even though you can't help thinking that someone on his Madison Avenue salary could surely afford a child minder two mornings a week.
Some nice chemistry between the warring spouses though and an upsetting, memorable scene when Billy wants ice-cream for dinner.
Hugely popular on its initial release, this looks, in retrospect, like nothing much more than a glossy soap passed off as serious drama
