KM 31

‘La llorona’ (the Crying Woman), a banshee-like spook, has featured in Mexican horror pictures since the ’30s, although in this latest incarnation she’s had a makeover based on recent Japanese ghost stories.

On a stretch of highway beside the eponymous marker, Agata (Fox) thinks she has knocked down a little boy. Looking for the body, she is herself run over. Twin sister Catalina (also Fox) shares a link with her comatose sibling and becomes obsessed with the accident black-spot, eventually being drawn into the tunnels where the creature lives.

A standard if downbeat shudder picture, with an impressive, chilling apparition and murkily gripping subterranean wanderings.
