★★★★★

The finest series in screen history reaches its climax with this six-part masterpiece (subtitled A Chronicle Of Beginnings And Endings) that brings the influence of America, Russia and East Germany to bear on the insular Rhineland region of the Hunsrück. The way in which Edgar Reitz contrasts the tempestuous relationship between composer Henry Arnold and chanteuse Salome Kammer with the tensions that followed Germany’s reunification is exceptional, his command of the complex politico-cultural details making the action so engrossing and authentic. He also handles the impressive supporting cast with supreme delicacy, so that each character’s subplot stands alone while binding effortlessly into the whole.

A must for aficionados, this completes a major artistic landmark.
