Dark Waters Review

An atmospheric, if plot-light, horror movie shot in the Ukraine by British-based director Mariano Baino. Our heroine travels to an island dominated by a convent full of mad nuns to discover why she is living under a curse, and sundry bizarre things happen to her. It’s unusually straight-faced for a modern horror film despite the ridiculous stretches of the plot, but the oppressive and alien setting (all piles of rotting fish, mad blind hermits and flagellant nuns) is intriguing. Remeniscent of the slow burn histrionics (and lack of coherence) that gave Dario Argento his name, this will probably find favour with a the low key horror crowd and little else.
