Ken Kesey wrote One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest as he was convinced many of the inmates in the mental institution where he worked were there because corporate America didn't know how to cope with their individualism. Milos Forman agreed to direct the 1975 film adaptation as the story reminded him of Czechoslovakia under the Communists. Dean Brooks allowed the film to be shot in the Oregan State Residential Psychiatric Hospital as he felt it might benefit his patients.
The motives, the methods and the madness are all explored with perceptive wit in this 'making of' documentary. It's just a shame Jack Nicholson wasn't available to proffer his memories of Randle P. McMurphy, whom he described in his Oscar acceptance speech as "a cross between Hamlet and Jesus Christ".
