Thirteen years ago, writer-director David Wain’s Wet Hot American Summer brilliantly subverted the ’80s summer-camp movie — and Paul Rudd was arguably the best thing in it. Now, after directing Rudd in Role Models and Wanderlust, Wain returns to the cake-and-eat-it school of movie cliché subversion with a hit-and-miss postmodern rom-com, as “not too handsome, not too Jewish” Joel (Rudd) and klutzy-but-cute candy-store owner Molly (Amy Poehler) relate the ups and downs of their relationship to another couple (Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper). Cobie Smulders, Ed Helms and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are among those in on the joke.
