When Belgian couple Didier (Heldenbergh) and Elise (Baetens) learn that their young daughter has cancer, the screen flashes back to show the pair in the early throes of their love affair. He's a musician, she's joins his band. The future, though, is bumpy.
Country & Western meets family drama in this Belgian film, as a singing couple’s marriage is strained unbearably by their child’s illness. Some developments feel forced and unconvincing; the way the relationship shows through the stage duets is far more affecting.
Plot contrivances aside, it's easy to see why this Belgian drama, powerfully sound-tracked by bluegrass tunes, has seduced festival crowds.
