Black Rainbow

A creepy, intelligent, unsettling thriller with a psychic theme written and directed by Get Carter director Mike Hodges. Medium Rosanna Arquette travels around the Bible Belt with her drunken father (Jason Robards), relaying happy messages from "the other side".

Things get darker as she foretells disasters and "witnesses" the murder of a union organiser, becoming a target for hitmen and tabloid sensationalism. Tom Hulce plays a sceptical hack who takes some convincing. Arquette is remarkable in a demanding role, and the unusual mix of complex social comment and religious speculation makes this an intriguing, challenging watch.

A tense, rewarding supernatural thriller.
