The Michael Fassbender-starring adaptation of best-selling video game Assassin’s Creed is not even in cinemas until December. But in keeping with its time-travelling hero, the studio has seen into the future – and decreed a sequel.

Details, understandably, are fairly thin on the ground so far. The Tracking Board reports that New Regency, the production company behind the original, are prepping for the sequel with Fassbender returning to play new character Callum Lynch. Frank Marshall is among the producers; there’s no word on whether director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) will return.

Considering there’s not even a trailer for the first film yet, this seems like a stamp of confidence in the film, which is already being touted as potentially the first genuinely decent video game adaptation.

Based on the bestselling Ubisoft franchise, the series details the battle between two mystical secret societies – the Assassins and the Templars – and characters who explore the memories of their historical ancestors. Also, there’s free-running!

Of course, many films have sequels announced early, only for disappointing box-office returns to see that sequel quietly removed from the schedule. It remains to be seen whether Assassin’s Creed will be a hit. But the omens look good.
