Andrew And Jeremy Get Married Review

Image for Andrew And Jeremy Get Married

An intimate study of a gay couple with radically different backgrounds, as their big day approaches. But it's not all roses between the pair.

★★★★★

Don Boyd's documentary isn't so much about gay marriage in general as it is a specific, intimate study of the titular couple. Sixty-nine year-old Jeremy, a crumpled academic, is 20 years older than his lover Andrew, a rugged retired bus driver, who ended up in jail after becoming a junkie and drug dealer. Boyd quickly establishes that the men's radically different backgrounds don't stop them from being loving partners, but as we hear their rich histories and glimpse unguarded moments, we see the cracks in their relationship.

The pair are intriguing company, yet, due to the insights we've been given, the climactic event of their commitment ceremony sadly feels a lot more hollow than it should.
